I will be the first to admit that yes that title did read a little dramatic, however, as in everything there is a shred of truth in even the most dramatic and exaggerated statements. Sometimes it is important to have a moan and exaggerate the daily struggles of life, though. Telling people to go about life and live everyday to the upmost can be great to use as an eye-catching article headline or on the thumbnail of a cheesy ‘’motivational’’ style video essay on YouTube comprising of random people working out in the gym and lads climbing mountains. However, it is not the reality of existing.
Trying is a grind. There should be a more generalised conversation out there about how difficult trying is. People that are professional Tryers and who go about their lives checking off every little mundane thing that must be done throughout their lives in a systematic manner really need to be intently studied. Yes, it is easy to fall into the whole ‘’Everyone else has it better than you’’ trap and scroll through Instagram in envy at the world while you’re sitting there with a half-eaten tub of Ben and Jerry’s, but I honestly think that’s actually normal. It is so easy to compare and contrast our lives with the lives of others nowadays that I actually don’t think there’s much we can do to avoid it. Even with the most willpower in the world it is simply impossible to not come across somebody out there who has it better than you because the ease of access to social media is unescapable.
The point I’m trying to get across is, it’s literally impossible to avoid seeing the lives of others on social media so don’t feel bad if you think they’re doing better than you, because odds are they’re probably not and also it’s human nature to feel like we can always do better so there’s nothing wrong with how you’re feeling. The overarching point of this article, though, is to basically give out about life and honestly, I have no shame about doing this whatsoever.
Getting into routines can be especially useful for someone like me who is prone to the aul lazy streak every now and then. Saying that I think most people are better at acting on spontaneity and are more impulsive in their approach to life. I do not think either of them approaches are right or wrong by the way I’m just making an observation that we all deal with life in different ways. So that’s why when I see videos on the internet of people offering quick solutions or telling people how they live their lives in a preachy manner it kind of grinds my gears. I have no problem in offering helpful advice to people but unfortunately, I think there is a growing culture of ‘’you’re not doing life right, I am so listen to me’’ advice littered across the online world.
Personally I don’t think anything makes me want to give up on a skill/hobby/interest of mine more than seeing somebody who has put in substantially more time into said interest and casually post their results on Instagram at 3pm on a Sunday blowing any personal best I may have had out of the water. But again, on the other hand there is nothing wrong with posting a video on the internet with the intent of wanting to help others I just think they underestimate where people are in their own lives. If you’re waiting for me to offer a solution to this by the way It will not be in this article, like I said this is more of a way for me to air out grievances I have with the world and I don’t think you’re going to take away any life changing words from me here, sorry…
Just getting up out of bed and going to work in the morning consistently is an absolute grind, that alone is a massive herculean effort that we don’t give ourselves enough credit for. Where are the influencers posting a 5 day up at 7am having their Weetabix and leaving the house to go to work streaks at? That’s right they don’t exist, but that’s not to say that its not an impressive feat if that is your life every day. Also just going to train after work consistently can be a task and a half when you are commuting home after a long day and are met with distraction after distraction and comfort after comfort on your way to the gym, the temptation to not go is absolutely vast and the fact we do it most days is a massive achievement, but again, you won’t see people gloat online about going to the gym three days in a row when you’ve had three days of hell in work. Like I said before I don’t really know where I’m going with this article but sure we may as well keep going on the journey through the madness of my mind and see where it ends up
You then add in the personal/social responsibilities we all must deal with through the course of life and it adds another element of chaos and forced organisation that we have to deal with (another reason why these internet goons who preach about how easy everything is winds me up.)
I guess the point I’m making is not everything in life comes with an easy fix attached to it, and sometimes you fall off the horse but you have to keep getting back on it because if you don’t life is just going to keep happening around you and you’ll just end up miserable that you’re not doing any of the things you enjoy doing because you’ve fallen into the trap of comparing yourself to people whose whole existence may be the hobby that you enjoy doing occasionally, and where you may enjoy doing it once every so often, you’ll eventually come across some maniac that makes you feel like there’s no point in pursing your hobbies because they’re doing It 12 hours a day meanwhile you can only dedicate an hour maximum to it because you have an actual life going on around you. I must admit I have to get better at this too.
I think it’s okay to complain too, and honestly complaining about the mundane relentless march of life isn’t something we should look down on for doing, it just means that you are a normal person and not these insane hyper driven unicorns we come across on Instagram everyday. I think if you can find success throughout your day in the small chores we conquer everyday we’ll all be much happier. But just remember its impossible to avoid comparison so don’t feel bad for doing it just remember this legendary quote by one of histories most important figures
Don’t believe everything you read on the internet – Abraham Lincoln.
